Les Mielles reach 7s finals day

Les Mielles took on Royal Guernsey GC on Sunday 20th in the Hampshire 7s Channel Island Final, winning the match 6-1 to reach the finals day for the second time in 3 years.

Here is a brief write up on how the matches went;

Peter Roscouet 9 versus Grant Stephens 11 - this was a tight match which saw Peter crossing half way 2 down. Peter grabbed some momentum on the back nine, quickly getting back to all square and then pushing on to lead by 2. Back came Grant to get it back to all square going down the 18th and he went on to win the last hole to win the first point for Royal Guernsey.
Danny Brannan 13 versus Paul Bourgaize 10 - Danny got off to a fast start winning the first 2 holes, Paul got one back on the 4th, only for Danny to win the 5th and 6th to be 3up. Paul then went on a 3 hole blitz winning the 9th, 10th and 11th to square the match up but then hit his tee shot OB on the 12th giving the lead back to Danny. Paul won the 14th and Danny won the 15th to restore his 1 shot lead and the remaining 3 holes were halved, resulting in Danny winning the match 1up.
Dan Cavey 8 versus Tim Cotterell 7 - Dan and Tim swapped holes on one and two, but Dan then took control winning four holes in a row and ended the front nine 5up. Dan stayed in control on the back nine and secured the win on the 14th, winning the match 5&4.
Harry Singleton 7 versus Joe Roberts 11 - Harry found himself up against a solid player in Joe and neither player could get away in this match until the twelfth which Harry won to go 2 up. Harry kicked on from here with some good golf and took the game 5 and 3 for another point for Les Mielles
Paul Horton 9 versus Harry Ingrouille 9 - another competitive match with both players evenly matched. Paul managed to get ahead in the game and kept Harry at bay every time he threatened a comeback. Harry won the 16th to get it back to a one hole deficit but Paul kept calm and won the 17th to win the match 2&1.
James O'Hara 10 versus Harry Bushby 4 - a scrappy start saw James win the first hole with an eight, with a good up and down on the second seeing him go 2 up. James then won three of the next five holes to lead by 5 but was pegged back to 4 on the eighth, only to hole a monster putt on nine to restore his 5 shot cushion at the turn. The back nine was a lot tighter but James stayed in control of the match to win it on the fourteenth 5&4.
Matt Cooper 5 versus Charlie Bowen 3 - Matt took on young Charlie and built a healthy lead early on which he never relinquished. Matt kept pushing on over the back 9 and ended up winning the match 6&4.

An impressive display by the whole team, who continue to punch above their weight and get to another finals day.

They will head to Corhampton Golf Club on September 28th to try and reclaim the title they won in 2023

Battle of the Beards

Scratch Singles Matchplay 2024

In a commanding display of golf, Matt triumphed over Harry in the scratch matchplay final with a 6&4 victory, sealing the match after a rollercoaster day of momentum swings.

Matt came out strong on the front nine, setting the tone early with an eagle on the 1st hole, followed by a series of solid pars. His consistency paid off as he built a commanding 4-up lead by the turn.

However, Harry was not ready to concede just yet. His back-nine comeback began with a chip-in birdie on the 12th, followed by two crucial pars that chipped away at Matt's lead, reducing it to just 1 up. But Matt responded with remarkable composure, winning the final four holes of the front 18 to re-establish a 5-up lead at the halfway mark.

As the wind picked up on the back 18, Harry found some momentum again, winning two of the first three holes to reduce the deficit. Yet, Matt's steadiness under pressure was on full display as he reeled off six pars in a row, building a 6-up lead with just nine holes to play.

Harry pulled one back on the 10th, but Matt's par on the 12th restored his 6-up advantage with six holes remaining. Though Harry extended the match with a par on the 13th, the contest was effectively decided on the 14th. With both players on the green in three, Harry narrowly missed his birdie putt, and then conceded the hole after Matt's solid play, handing Matt a well-earned 6&4 victory.

It was a match defined by strong starts, momentum shifts, and ultimately Matt's unshakable consistency that saw him claim the win.

32 Players took part on a beautiful sunny day, enjoyed by all.
Its a tricky format with the added jepody of selcting to either stay in the strokeplay competition or convert to stableford on the 13th tee box. Leading to lots of tactical discussion and hand wringing (in the end the decision was an even split between both formats).

It was a Captains Day with Tracey Bougourd and Chris O'Conner part of the Best Gross and Best Net winning Teams.

FRANCIS PAIRS BETTERBALL KNOCKOUT 2024

Winners

In near perfect conditions, Ian Ritchie and Peter Dixon took on Marcus Meadows and George Bryan-Orr in the final of the pairs KO.

Peter and Ian came out of the blocks in hot form, winning the first four holes and taking early control of the match. The remainder of the front nine was a nip and tuck with Marcus and George pulling one back, but Peter and Ian maintained their advantage and crossed into the back nine 3 up.

Runners Up

Their dominance continued on the 10th hole, extending their lead further. However, Marcus and George refused to go down without a fight. Showing remarkable resilience, they stormed back into the match by winning the next four holes, narrowing the gap and taking the momentum. After halving the 15th, Marcus and George won the 16th to turn the tables, going 1 up with just two holes to play.

But Peter and Ian weren’t finished yet. They responded with a brilliant birdie on the 17th to square the match, and both teams held their nerve to halve the 18th, sending the contest to a sudden-death playoff.

In fitting fashion, Marcus and George sealed their remarkable comeback on the 19th hole, claiming the title with a birdie to win the first extra hole and cap off a great final.

Handicap Matchplay Final

This weekend saw that last matchplay final being decided in a tightly contested final with both Peter and Harry delivering some impressive golf, with the match swinging back and forth right until the 18th hole.

The game started with Peter making a clutch save on the 2nd hole, getting up and down from the front-right bunker to salvage par. However, Harry took the 5th after Peter found trouble in the rough, struggling with his second shot, allowing Harry to gain an early edge. The front nine was a close affair, with both players showing great touch around the greens, particularly on the 8th, where they each scrambled well to save par. At the turn, Harry held a slender 1-up lead heading into the back nine.

On the 10th, Harry extended his lead to 2 up after a solid tee shot set him up for a regulation par, while Peter missed the green right and couldnt make his par. But Peter bounced back immediately on the 11th, capitalizing on a missed green by Harry to get back to 1 down with a solid par. A poor tee shot on the 12th found the pond for Peter, and Harry took advantage, making a par to regain his 2-up lead.

The momentum shifted again on the 13th when Harry couldn’t get up and down from the back-left bunker, and Peter hit a fine approach to 15 feet, winning the hole to cut the deficit back to 1. Peter then caught fire with his irons, hitting approaches to 6 feet on the 14th and 8 feet on the 15th, sinking both birdie putts to flip the match and go 1 up.

Harry responded under pressure on the 16th, holing a tricky 8-foot putt down the slope to save par and halve the hole, keeping the match alive. The 17th saw both players hit it close, with Harry just off the front edge and Peter safely on the green near the pin, but neither could gain an advantage, and the match headed to the 18th with Peter still 1 up.

On the final hole, Peter hit an iron down the middle and Harry decided to pull out the driver and go for the green, pulling his drive slightly left of the pump shed. Peter followed up with an approach to 20 feet, but when they crossed over the pond, Harry’s ball was nowhere to be found and he was forced to concede the hole, giving Peter the match and a 2-up victory.

It was a fantastic battle, with both players showing moments of brilliance, but Peter’s late surge on the back nine proved decisive in securing the win.
